Making a mess of things.

Painting

My paintings are rooted in graphic design, with threads of abstract expressionism and lowbrow illustration disrupting the clarity of anything too rigid.

I don’t often work in large, cohesive series. Most pieces start as experiments: new materials, new techniques, new ways of working. Sometimes they turn into a direction I want to keep pushing. More often they’re prototypes that get repurposed into the next experiment.

For a long time I’ve been hesitant to show or sell much of this work. It rarely feels “finished” in the way I imagine it should, but I’m becoming okay with that.

Woodworking

I designed our backyard studio to bounce between painting and woodworking. I’ve found that the more deterministic rhythm of making stuff out of wood acts as a nice reprieve from the chaos of experimenting with paint and mixed media. And as a bonus, it’s produced plenty of furniture for our home.

Design

I work as a Product Director at Adobe. My current focus is exploring, prototyping and designing generative systems that both enrich and enhance human artistry.

I’m grateful to live in Seattle, WA with my wife and daughter.
